Best of Hong Kong: Hot pot

Our HK friends took us to this really popular hot pot, 稻香超級漁港 Tao Heung Super 88 (New Town Shopping Centre, Shatin, Hong Kong) during our first night here.. They actually thought of the 大牌檔 first but didn't want anything nasty to happen on our first night here so we decided on this place instead.
I hate to read Chinese and its even worse vertically..... menus suddenly became alot more challenging, and not in the i-cant-decide kind of manner.
I like this place for the variety of sauce - chilli sauce, satay sauce, sambal, spring onions, chilli, fried onions.
The soup was half spicy (it wasnt spicy at all) or plain.
The beef shabu shabu was really good..
The best they have here is the meatballs because they were all really springy and had alot of bite to it..
Especially these cuttlefish balls with corn..
The multi coloured dumplings...
And this is the most interesting thing they had here - I don't think you can guess what this is...
You actually use this like a toothpaste - you squeeze the noodle out of the narrowest part and voila you get squid ink noodles - if you have unsteady hands like mine you get uneven squiggly strands.
小肥羊 Little Sheep ( Mung Kok, Hong Kong) is where we had THE BEST MEAL in Hong Kong. It specialises in Mongolian Hot pot and the lamb based soup is fantastic. I'm craving for the extremely robust soup now.
Some nuts to whet your appetite...
Again another mind boggling fan2-ti3-zi4 menu...
I can already smell the soup just looking at this photo....the soup has the most amazing spices and chilli oil, with the aroma from the lamb bones.. starting the steamboat by drinking the soup will whet your appetite even more !! Its half spicy, and the other half non-spicy, but both have this amazing lamb flavour to it.
Each table gets a complimentary once-only serving of lamb shabu shabu. We were so anxious to start eating we forgot about cooking it slightly (cos its so thin) and just dumped the whole lot in...
Same thing applied for the beef shabu shabu but we could have multiple servings of it so we didnt make the same mistake twice !
I realise its most unappetitising taking photos of all these raw food (besides sashimi) but these were the next best part of the meal after the soup and the shabu shabu....bring on the meat! The beef slices, minced lamb paste and the beef balls were extremely tasty.
The cuttlefish balls and the lamb balls were also power..
We loved those floating fried brown tofu/fish puffs floating around....they were really airy and light yet chewy in the middle, savoury puffs in spicy soup was fantastic.
And the next most fantastic thing was this fried fish skin - it fizzles when you (attempt to) dissolve it in soup and its like slightly crisp, slightly soggy - and soaks up most of the delicious soup.
We had some noodles as well - apparently its made from fish...
As you can see the noodles turn out to be extremely gelatinious but we loved the texture...
We had many many rounds of our favourites and I left out the seafood (the fish and cuttlefish slices !! most unphotogenic) and Its a wonder how we managed to roll out at all....in fact, we were the last of the last, they were setting up the tables for dinner....
