Sumiya Charcoal Grill super value chiraishi set lunch

Recommend this place ( Orchard Central) for a quiet awesome set meal complete with soup, chawanmushi, dessert! Generous chunks of fish topped up with a generous serving of roe.
And a high rise view from the 12th floor ( well the nicest thing to spot was the Istana..)

Fantastic value lunch for mom and I for a total of 44 bucks all in. Will be back

Appare udon

Post call udon was very expensive indeed!

Huge bowl of mentaiko cream udon ( he was rather lactose intolerant after that though he enjoyed it )

My udon with tomato and eggs.

Bowls look huge but are manageable. I guess we have pledged allegiance to Tamoya :p

Tamoya udon

This is my second time here- first was with my siblings when I had the extra chewy version and it came dry with a separate dip. It warrants a separate visit as this is on the top 50 list to try ;)

Omg this is the best recovery food after tennis ( perfect after rain weather and improved ground strokes :p ). Raw egg udon ! Tasted oh so fab with the crusted bits of tempura.add seaweed and spring onion for garnish.. The dip is not really necessary cos it tasted too good on its own !!

Out of the tempura we had (prawn, sweet potato, eggplant and pumpkin ) our favorite was prob the last. Sigh an inspiration for our remaining quarter in the fridge :p

Ended the night with Paris masters finals djokovic vs ferrer pity for a déjà vu 2-0. Crabbies ginger beer- this time with strawberry and lime never fails to knock us out :p

The Naked Finn

Post post call on a slightly drizzly Tuesday night, made our way to Naked Finn ( though I thought I wanted to save it till pre call thurs )... Sat at the counter watching the mixologist do their thing ;) think we much prefer to watch cooks lol.
Really happy we got to try their momo- cocktail! He showed us the peach liqueur he used in addition to the fresh momo, grossly pounded into a mixture with dry gin. We have thus started the countdown for the hunt for this momo liquer
We went ala carte- had the twin portion of squid, scallop cerviche and the piquant vermicelli. I like the crunch ends of the squid much.

Had the fried barramundi too the crisp skin is done to perfection.
We had the prawns as well. J had fun peeling all 12 of them haha.

They were nice to give us a conplimentary serving of the pumpkin soup! Much reminds us of the pumpkin ( unintended ) purée that we tried to cook on Sat night lol. Too bad they ran out of the mussels !!

On a separate note ... Happy eating and posting ;) whatever floats your boat.

Sushi airways

With clinic ending at 6 and exits after, headed to Js who's also caught up with an admin bomb in his own words. Almost headed to Liang court but detoured to a nearer Sushi Airways (20 Baghdad Street) for a sushi craving.

The restaurant is decked out to mimic an aeroplane, with plane like windows and seats. Even the menu is styled like a flight menu - would be great if air planes did serve food like this lol
Salmon tataki salad- like a carpaccio and J was rather amused by the chrysanthemum petals till he bit into the bulb of the stalk.
Double salmon - we were quite excited when they seared the top salmon... Reminds us of the gold standard of the seared fatty salmon in ryoshi sushi ( makes me salivate thinking about it ). This has a crisp salmon skin atop a seared salmon , beneath it a sushi mini maki dusted with spice.
We we're between a sushi platter and a sashimi platter and decided for the former... Lots of wasabi in those tiny tuna rolls ! My favorite is prob the mackerel, interestingly. All the sushi were jumbo sized, and really fresh.

The chef here really hosts us in a very fatherly manner, and when we saw him later on (outside the restaurant) asked why we weren't home yet it's starting to rain ! Quite amused:p

B@Rochester

Met C after an early day at ot :-) finally dated the girl out - picked her from moe and we headed to Rochester ( love the free p) before the dear girl heads to our neighboring country.

Love the quiet surroundings of Rochester ( just with j at Starbucks on mon). Fusion menu - Japanese at B.
Garlic white bait.
Black cod
Lobster soumen - half share :-)

Love the flavors of the food - not overwhelming at all and had a great balance. Quiet place too , many couples having dates... Was hosted well by the service staff there too... Will be back !

C tennis soon !

Goto Japanese Restaurant

First kaiseki meal with mummy on my second day of leave and the first spent locally :p
Highlight of the first course is prob the uber smooth and dense sesame tofu. The sashimi was divine - my tops was the scallop, mummy's was conch ( with plum sauce ). There was also tuna, flatfish, amberjack and squid.
Next was the highlight for me - striped jack it was very sweet ... Amazing . Prob the best slab of fish for me ever...
The other dishes of tofu and winter melon soup, grilled onigiri was pretty unremarkable.1

Dessert was a trio of sorbet, English tea mousse and fruit.
Doing nails together and having a great set lunch .. Can't wait for more mommy time ;) maybe shinji next time.

Black sesame tofu ,fried salmon, conch, lotus root

Assortment of sashimi
Yello tail, flat fish, Tuna, conch with plum sauce , (the most amazing) scallop and squid.
Striped jack- amazingly sweet

Mushrooms soup with egg tofu

Grilled onigiri

English milk tea mousse, fruits, raspberry sorbet

Saboten

Swapped clinic for eot/dot for my first tkr, then to asc for 3 tums(1 of which was a real egg like neurogenic one !), met the girls for some katsu at Saboten, Parco Millenia walk. Unlimited supply of shredded cabbage went fantastically well with the yuzu soya sauce whilst short dressed ( actually drenched lol) hers in sesame sauce. The girls order tenderloin and loin and I had the salmon katsu. Love the breaded croquette but I think the highlight was still the wonderful yuzu soya;) the green tea ice cream that came with the set took forever to melt so didn't manage to finish it :(
Keisuke Tokyo next date ;)
Looks like the tiny bento place that I went with the siblings is now replaced with ma Maison/monster curry :(

Ramen Keisuke Tori King

Minimalistic menu-3 flavors from which you can choose, yet customisable- the noodles consistency, oil and salt. You can also choose from 3 levels of toppings.I had the original , eggs, normal consistency, less oil and normal salt but I must say I liked S's black option. Was slightly spicy and fab with the bonito flakes ( which you can help yourselves too)Maybe when I'm braver I'll choose the green one ( I have a phobia for wasabi).
Love the self service of sides eg the bean sprouts( really massively od on it ), free flow eggs and bonito flakes and chili sauce.
Returned back to hd rds and one pile and a night of babysitting in the angio suite :(

Aoki

Tomato salad, wintermelon

My Chiraishi set - lotsa tamago, mackerel, tuna, fatty tuna, sea urchin, squid

loved the gorgeous deep purple blue pickles..

Mummy's sushi set.. which I finished the tamago for her;)

Home made mochi, sweet corn ice cream, plum jelly.

Finally! Post call with one re-adm for isch gut (thank goodness no more chop..nothing much left anyway!!) and another at 3am for post gast (needed rrt the next am and lotsa tropes...) but other than that found a new ritual of digging up old papers in the cso to read after the night rounds..which feels like a walkabout not like the paper entries in pas...and the reg cooks!! gosh...pasta/meatballs/shrooms.. its a real luxury to have a home (or pantry..) cooked meal, this warrants another entry on its own once i figure out how to connect the phone to the com..yes kels..getting more tech savvy here okay... esp since this is the 2nd home cooked pasta meal on call..amazing anaesths ;)

anyways, with post call at 1030am (super shiok) napped abit before heading out with mom with an excuse to pick up obagi stuffs from taka, we ate at Aoki (Shaw Center), a meal i've promised her since xmas (but not successful cos Aoki doesnt open on Sundays). Appetiser was a tomato salad and a wintermelon salad (which initially my untrained buds thought was radish)..prefer the dressing at Tatsuya though. Mummy had the sushi set (though she was tempted by the $100 omakase...) and was eyeing my chiraishi... in the end we shared 50/50..she really liked mine.. the tuna was so fresh! so red and translucent.. the colour of fresh fish is really gorgeous. This is probably one of the freshest chiraishi I've had..quite enjoy the dices of fresh sashimi atop the sesame rice (though the bed of rice was too little....).

Desserts were also an interesting affair with plum jelly, sweet corn ice cream, home made mochi. But of cos as the day wore on we had to stop by for ice kachang/chengtng...mum was just looking for a pair of black shoes while receeing all the stuffs i bought in new york and the singapore version prices...just to feel good...haha. Face shop stocks a eraser like eye make up pen and a cheaper version of benefit's browzings which I cant wait to try! And orchard central's black market and editor's market was a little too interesting for street/office wear..

Shin Yuu Japanese restaurant

Chawan Mushi - the default starter

Complimentary starters - oysters, smoked duck, beef and salmon sushi rolls. I must say I find the pink cheese quite intriguing (the ones covering the salmon). Beef was kinda drowned in sauce (though I like stuff drowned in sauces...)

Sashimi platter - the default must have every round

Scallop again with the intriguing pink cheese.

Wagyu beef cubes - a default for most company..

These complimentary tiny morsels of octopus was all mine ;)

Fat shishamo - the fried ones that Z taught me to appreciate

Salmon+salmon skin

Avocado rolls

Sunday on a weekend J was not confined we headed out on a rainy evening to have the dinner (thanks for the treat - hope its the exams plus more to come including that coveted place ;)). That evening rounded thru HV thru Queens and I was totally stranded by the bins along Coronation Rd West. Totally no kind samaritian = late for dinner. But thanks for the lift;)

Shin Yuu (Greenwood) serves a decent ala carte buffet and was recommended by J. Didnt fast today - it was the FCCS course and of cos they fed us well throughout the day... difficult to do anything else when its just lectures all day long! Anyways. Got a window seat and the feast began.

The favourite part of the buffet was prob the sashimi (they have yellow tail and swordfish too). Btw king fish= yellow tail! Totally got fooled. Haha. We had multiple portions of sashimi +++. All they're missing to complete a buffet would be eel sans rice, and tamago too.

The sushi rolls (salmon skin, avocado) were also good cos the rice was actually well done (despite us trying to stay away from carbs!).

The wagyu beef cubes that night was not great - J said he has had better at the same place.

Fried stuff wise- surprisingly I liked the bits of the fried octopus - i think it was a complimentary serving. J loved the tempura loads, and the soft shell crab was the usual (I like!). The fried shishamo surprised J a little (cos they were huge) but was a little salty and different from the way I remember it was done at Riverview hotel when I first tried it with Z.

Sushi Tei

Monday started with a good list of sub 10, and with Boss away, only one hernia was planned but another turned up! And was not listed (though the mrn was searchable.....) but thankfully we managed to squeeze another in, to the wrath of no one. The initial noon deadline was also thankfully no longer. But the first was a rush, still.

We headed out to lunch - wp in her 3quarts and carrying her precious m/m, driving us to Sushi Tei (Tampines One) where she overordered yet ago. $180 bucks for 3 peeps is quite insane..for sushi tei !!

Fried Salmon skin - mom's fren's reco has been my fave since sec school. How nostalgic. I'm reminded of the HK steamboats, where the fried fish skin when dipped into soup crackles and becomes part crisp part soft -most intriguing textures.

Sashimi which was just nice 1 piece each. Particularly enjoyed the unknown fish to the right.

Mango prawn roll - the core was a fried prawn tempura. Loved the rice stuffed head was digging out the innards.

Clams- with lotsa cream and cheese this was quite good.

But the best is the jumbo prawns with a creamy roe top - this was awesome possum!!!

Wp's craving for hotpot- salmon spicy hotpot, which she regretted cos she'd have preferred the miso soup one. The spiciness is not quite the tom yum kind which has lotsa kick.

Unagi, of which we had difficulty conquering! humongous.

Both of the top belonged to a set lunch meal, where I thought came with 3 side dishes each (included in the price), but I was mistaken!!! So bloody misleading, so i ordered 6 sides in total - half udon, 2 x salmon sashimi, sashimi salad, chawan mushi and the fried bait below
I ended up eating lotsa this white bait (and the fried salmon skin) - I'm a fan of crisp fried food!

We were overstuffed and wp had no space for her matcha ice cream. We exited seeing the post ops and quite a no whilst I completed my angiejolie in 10 min flat. But was H to fetch bro over and then to the east again to get dad. Travelling 2x up down PIE to east is really no mean joke!!

House, Acid Bar

Got the weekend off for the pledge taking - dad gave me a lift to m/w and then after headed down but was almost late, so had to cab from holland v. Still ended up lingering around the foyer with kels before we headed in. A little strange to be in the same pledge taking as many foreign (and familiar) regs/even acs (our dear vir lady haha). It was like grad ceremony again, worse still cos many in the crowd werent that familiar. Even the panel up on stage too.

When it was all over, we remained in our seats to capture our last moment collectively as a class, then we broke off for a catered lunch, but shortly after our cg headed out - and all in J's van - Wm and I ended up being very very squashed behind in the boot. It was rather traumatic cos we kept imagining the boot will give way and we'll roll out, all ready to be rolled over by the incoming traffic. But we survived !! Made it to the destination, House (Dempsey). In time to find 2 other groups (Pek's, and Ian's cliques).

Over the dinner, D recounted his horror stories while M was all ready to play punk with him soon to test the waters. The tale of fooling the operator got D in stitches but everyone'd love to witness the him at work. Haha. It was nice getting everyone tog, as Daryl almost couldnt make it.

My favourite ever sweet potato nibblets, and also the truffle fries which never saw my camera lens before it disappeared. Kels where are you lets go and try the PS's truffle fries on M's blog.

I was never a fan of Skinny Pizza until I tried this Fig and Cheese one. Its really fruity with the plump fresh figs. On the other hand the Veal one tasted very much like atas rendang.

If i ever do land up here again I'd wanna try the Truffle mushroom one.

Chocolate toffee cake was a favourite of Marc's. I guess I never looked at choc cakes the same way again after PS's. Size-wise.

Strawberry short cake was also popular, and I like it that the cake was warm - not after we drowned it in sauce though.
Jeremy requested for the carrot cake, and D asked for the Salted caramel cake (not pictured cos I had it with Kels before). My favourite remains the latter. Such interesting take on textures.
J kindly dropped us at DFS (where it was a hidden excuse to shop more!) , and we headed to Ion to see the blue B.V. bag that never was (sigh, regrets are left in HK) and hungry us headed to Hu-Hu Udon (B4, Ion Orchard). I had the cold Udon. My favourite cold one is still the one mei and i had at a Kyoto train station. Best ever. Doused in tasty light sauce with plenty of seaweed. The closest here would be Tetsu in Tanglin Mall.
Kel's curry beef udon. Tasted pretty much like my usual maggi mee kinda curry flavour.
Soon after we headed to Acid Bar. Recollection of Chong's the first time we were here. Fries and Calamari combi, along with Sangria is, well, bliss. Esp with the right company!
I was happy enough they played my all time favourite Under the Bridge, as requested. I never tire of that song, accousitic, though its been a long time since Z.

Met Chongs that night too ;) great full stop to the goodbye.
